The Newest Microsoft Rebrand For 2024

If you've used Microsoft's cloud identity tools, you've likely heard of Azure Active Directory (Azure AD). Well, Microsoft has renamed it to Microsoft Entra ID. Let’s break down what this means for you and your business.

Why the Name Change?

Microsoft decided to rebrand Azure Active Directory to better reflect its evolution from a simple directory service into a comprehensive cloud identity platform. The name change is part of a broader strategy to unify identity and access management solutions under the Microsoft Entra family.

What's Different?

Here's the good news: functionally, not much has changed. Microsoft Entra ID still offers the same features as Azure AD, including:

  • Single sign-on (SSO)
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)
  • Conditional access policies
  • Identity protection

The core capabilities remain the same, and any configurations you've already set up will continue to work seamlessly.

What Do You Need to Do?

For most businesses, the transition is straightforward:

  • No Action Required: There's no migration needed. Your existing Azure AD setup transitions automatically to Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Update Documentation: If your internal guides or IT documentation reference Azure AD, it’s a good idea to update them to reflect the new name.
  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on Microsoft’s communications for any new features or changes related to Microsoft Entra ID.

Microsoft Entra Family

The rebrand also introduces the broader Microsoft Entra family, which includes:

  • Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) – identity and access management.
  • Microsoft Entra ID Governance – identity governance and administration.
  • Microsoft Entra External ID – customer-facing identity management.
  • Microsoft Entra Verified ID – decentralised identity verification.
  • Microsoft Entra Permissions Management – cloud permissions management.

Why This Matters

While the name change itself doesn't alter how the service works, it signals Microsoft's long-term investment in identity security. For businesses, this means continued improvements in security, compliance, and access management – all under a more cohesive brand.
