UK Landlines Are Going Offline: Openreach Accelerates PSTN Switch-Off—Is Your Business Prepared?
Openreach has just added 137 more exchange areas to its “Stop Sell” list, impacting an additional 854,000 landlines across the UK. That means by mid-2026, traditional copper-based services—including landlines, fax lines, alarm systems, and some broadband types will no longer be available.
The nationwide PSTN & ISDN switch-off is officially set for January 31, 2027, as the UK transitions to Digital Voice and VoIP services.
While many households can plug a handset into their broadband router and carry on, vulnerable users, particularly those relying on telecare alarms or medical alert systems will face critical risks during power or internet outages.
What’s at Risk if You’re Not Prepared?
Telecare devices may fail when needed most
Offices using legacy PBX, security, or payment systems may face outages
Delayed migration can lead to downtime, lost functionality, and added costs
